The Red Guitar
The Red Guitar Navarra Old Vine 2005, a remarkable Spanish red wine, has its origins in the Navarra region of Northern Spain. Its maker is Bodega Ada, a small producer in the Navarra region. It might have been christened “Red Guitar” because the Spanish are said to have invented the guitar back in the sixteenth century. According to Nick Withers, the Brand Manager of Red Guitar, the wine captures the vibrant soul of Spain and is a tribute to the vivacious Spanish lifestyle.
The Red Guitar is a rare blend of 55 percent Tempranillo and 45 percent Granacha, two classic Spanish grape varietals. According to the wine tasting notes, it is “a ruby garnet robe, and an appealing perfume of cherries and red berries, underscored with some subtle earth, chocolate and juniper berries that carry over onto the palate with a medium full-to-full bodied frame, decent structure worth a few years further development and a reasonably long finish.”
The vineyards of Lerga, in the very heart of Navarra, produced the grapes for Red Guitar. The families that own these vineyards have grown grapes for more than four generations, and they take great pride in the fact that they give personal attention to each vine.
The Tempranillo and Granacha, which go into the Red Guitar, are vinified separately at moderate temperatures. After fermentation, they are aged separately. The final blending trials take place in the presence of Cellar Door, the American importer, shortly before bottling the wine. Ultimately, the wine is blended in such a way that its style appeals to the American market, which favors more fruit-forward wine as opposed to the Spanish domestic market.
The Red Guitar Navarra Old Vine 2005 is a solid, enjoyable wine that can be taken to the table with a variety of grilled red meats, tapas, chili without beans, and Fritos. Labeled as an “Old Vine” blend, it is available at a reasonable price of eight dollars and is considered to be a unique and tasty blend.
